Summary

WASHINGTON, Dec. 5 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Generations United (GU) announced today that $4 million for LEGACY Housing Demonstrations was included in the Transportation, Treasury, and Housing and Urban Development appropriations bill signed into law on November 30th. The LEGACY funds will provide the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) with the necessary resources to help local organizations develop housing specifically for the grandparent and other relative headed households who care for 6 million of the nation's children.

"Over two million grandparents, including more than 70,000 in my home state of Michigan, are raising their grandchildren," said Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), who offered the amendment to include the LEGACY provisions in the American Dream bill. "This can be a very positive situation for a child or adolescent, but these 'grandfamilies' have some very special needs, including the need for appropriate housing."
