Banco Popular North America, Ny Mets Recognize Ny Blood Center Lifesavers; Top Blood Donors From Metro Area Honored at Shea Stadium

Summary

NEW YORK, Aug. 23 /U.S. Newswire/ -- In the early Spring of 2006, Banco Popular and the New York Mets jointly worked with New York Blood Center (NYBC) to recruit blood donors for this summer, typically a difficult time for donations. The program reached its finale yesterday when over 2,000 blood donors were welcomed to Shea Stadium to see the New York Mets take on the St. Louis Cardinals. Banco Popular provided the tickets to attend the game for all of the program participants, which also included hundreds of past blood donors. The large number of donors, teamed with specific blood types needed at this time of year, made this program a true home run.

In addition, prior to the game five of NYBC's top blood donors were brought on-field for a ceremony to recognize their long-term commitment to saving lives. Donors from each of NYBC's five Blood Services regions -- Brooklyn/Staten Island, Hudson Valley (including the Bronx), Long Island (including Queens), New Jersey and New York (Manhattan) -- were chosen based on the number of whole-blood donations each made since 1986, in honor of the 20th anniversary of the Mets World Series victory. Collectively, these blood donors gave hundreds of pints of blood to treat patients and save lives in New York and New Jersey hospitals.
