WASHINGTON, April 19 /U.S. Newswire/ -- U.S. Senator Max Baucus (D-Mont.) is asking 26 energy development companies with leases on Montana's famed Rocky Mountain Front to find a less- sensitive place to drill for oil and gas.

The Bush Administration in October backed away from plans to begin drilling for natural gas and oil on the "Front," as its known, where rolling plains meet the jagged peaks of the Rockies near the Canadian border. But Baucus remains concerned over leases there that pre-date a 1997 moratorium on drilling. He wants permanent, long- term protections for the sensitive area.
