Brookfield Zoo Saddened by Loss of Western Lowland Gorilla

Over the past week she began showing symptoms indicating she was not feeling well. The zoo's animal keepers and veterinarians closely monitored her and treated her with antibiotics. She was scheduled for surgery the morning following her death to better determine the source of the infection.

Baraka made a significant contribution to the North American zoo western lowland gorilla population three years ago on April 4 when she gave birth to her first infant, a male named Nadaya. "Baraka was a prominent member of the zoo's gorilla group and she was a wonderful mother to Nadaya. The zoo's staff is just heart- broken over her sudden death," said Melinda Pruett-Jones, curator of primates at Brookfield Zoo.
