U.S. Census Bureau Daily Feature for Jan. 28: Helping Skiers

Summary

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 28: HELPING SKIERS

Profile America -- Wednesday, Jan. 28. Everyone who enjoys skiing owes a debt of gratitude to a man they probably haven't even heard of -- Robert Royce of Woodstock, Vermont. On this day in 1934, Royce set out to give skiing a boost by solving the problem of how to get back up the hill for another run. Using several hundred feet of rope, the engine out of an old Model T Ford, and some ingenuity, he made the first ski tow in the U.S. at Gilbert's Hill. The idea spread rapidly and so did the popularity of skiing. Now, more than 7-million people go downhill skiing each year, and over 2-million take part in cross- country skiing. Catching up fast is snowboarding enjoyed by more than 4-million annually. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau on the Web at http:/ /www.census.gov.
