DENVER, March 20 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Following three months of national outreach and evaluation, the Charter School Growth Fund (Fund) announced today that it has selected 15 of the most promising charter school organizations from across the country to begin working on ambitious expansion plans. The 15 groups will spend six months working with the Fund's experts to develop sustainable business models. After this initial period, the Fund will decide which of the 15 groups merit substantial investments over a 3 to 5 year growth period.

"We congratulate our 15 new partners, who competed in a field of remarkable range, diversity and quality," said John Lock, chief executive officer of the Fund. A total of 93 groups from 20 different states responded to the Fund's request for proposals. They represented 302 charter schools or roughly 9 percent of all charter schools operating nationally. Though relatively new, most applicants already had solid experience, with 60 percent operating more than one school and 30 percent operating 4 or more schools. Applications were evaluated through an objective, numerical process, and applicants were informed that only a subset of the first-stage winners would be considered for full-scale expansion support.
