BOGOTA, Colombia, May 11 /U.S. Newswire/ -- In an historic 5 to 3 decision, the Constitutional Court of Colombia ruled today in favor of decriminalizing abortion when a woman's life or health is in danger, the pregnancy is the result of rape, or the fetus has malformation incompatible with life outside the womb. Colombia's penal code provisions had previously outlawed the procedure under all circumstances.

Monica Roa, the Colombian attorney who filed the case and program director at Women's Link Worldwide, said, "This is a victory for women unparalleled in our country. But, with a sense of urgency, I can say that our work is not done. We must educate people as to the meaning of this decision and work with all of the branches of government so that when the first woman comes forward needing a legal abortion, she will be able to exercise this right."
