ST. LOUIS, March 1 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Hundreds of children, parents and early childhood educators will convene tomorrow in the Capitol Rotunda to recognize the 20th anniversary of the Parents as Teachers program. Now an international organization with more than 3,000 programs across the nation and throughout the world, Parents as Teachers began in Missouri with a legislative mandate in 1984 to offer parent education to all families through their local school districts. Backed by solid results from four years of pilot programs, Parents as Teachers immediately began leveling the playing field for all children entering kindergarten.

Governor Bob Holden and his wife were among the Parents as Teachers families. The Governor will speak at the Capitol event alongside Senators Michael Gibbons and Wayne Goode, Representative Kathlyn Fares, and Speaker Catherine Hanaway about the value early parenting support and developmental screenings bring to the state's schools and communities. Senator Christopher "Kit" Bond will address the group via a taped message. After hearing from these speakers, those in attendance will be visiting with their legislators to thank them for supporting Parents as Teachers.
