Elected Officials Emphasize the Importance of Collaborative Leadership

Summary

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Dec. 8 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The National League of Cities' (NLC) Congress of Cities opened today with economist and former Labor Secretary Robert Reich urging delegates to rely on high standards when making economic decisions in their local communities. "If you take the low road by trying to attract economic development with low rents, low taxes, and low environmental requirements, and you rely exclusively on this, there will always be someone who can do it cheaper," said Reich. "The more we invest in cities, the more productive we become, the more prosperous we grow as a nation."

More than 3,000 city officials from across the country gathered in Charlotte, NC, where NLC President Anthony A. Williams, mayor, Washington, DC, launched the new National City Network to serve as a catalyst for connecting city leaders. "The interconnectedness of this technology is powerful and can help us achieve our greatest potential," said Williams. "It's all about sustaining the knowledge and the relationships you make here at the Congress of Cities and through other NLC events, and then taking these resources in new and different directions."
