Joint Center Forum to Examine Strategies for Raising Studentachievement Without Sacrificing Their Development

Summary

WASHINGTON, Sept. 28 /U.S. Newswire/ -- For many parents and teachers, Dr. James P.Comer's recipes for educating America's children is common sense. But reality shows that much of his "total development" approach falls victim to the rush to score high on mandatory tests. The renowned Yale professor will discuss how schools and parents can produce a nurturing environment to enhance student learning today at a forum sponsored by the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies. The forum, "Preparing Today's Youth for Tomorrow's World," will be held at the National Press Club (Holeman Lounge), 529 14th Street, N.W., Washington, D.C., from 2:30 to 4 p.m.

Praised nationally for his pioneering School Development Program, which has been put into practice in over 600 schools over the last 20 years, Comer argues that children, particularly those from disadvantaged homes, need more than mere academic support. In his new book, Leave No Child Behind: Preparing Today's Youth for Tomorrow's World, he argues that "real accountability comes when everyone in the school is committed to the growth and learning of every student." Comer will present recommendations from his book at the forum.
