Faa Supervisor in Gulfport Endangers Flying Public, Says National Air Traffic Controllers Association

Summary

GULFPORT, Miss., Nov. 17 /U.S. Newswire/ -- A Federal Aviation Administration supervisor at the Gulfport Air Traffic Control Tower in Gulfport, Miss., violated operational standards and endangered the safety of the flying public by ordering a sick air traffic controller to report for work today after the employee specifically informed him that he was incapacitated for the performance of air traffic control duties.

As required, the controller called the supervisor, Ron Burrus, to inform Burrus that he was incapacitated due to a sinus infection and requested sick leave. Burrus, in direct violation of the requirement to approve sick leave in this situation, ordered the employee to report to the tower for duty. The employee reported for work and once again informed Burrus that he was incapacitated for the performance of his controller duties. Burrus assigned the employee to work an operational position controlling live air traffic.
