BROOKLYN, N.Y., June 29 /U.S. Newswire/ -- In the midst of an emergency appeal for blood donations, New York City Fire Department (FDNY) and New York Blood Center (NYBC) announced today the expansion of a community-based partnership to increase blood donations in New York City. Earlier launches occurred in Manhattan in January and in the Bronx in April. The dual purpose of the partnership is to educate the public on the need for blood both for hospital patients and for burn victims in particular. A public blood drive followed the press conference where members of the public donated blood on NYBC's state of the art "busmobile" located at Squad 1 - 788 Union Street in Brooklyn from 9:30 AM until 3 PM.

"We are grateful for the support that FDNY has given us," said Dr. Robert Jones, President and CEO of New York Blood Center. "This partnership will be a vital connection to the community in increasing awareness of the constant need for blood and help eliminate or reduce seasonal blood shortages. FDNY personnel are themselves regular and enthusiastic blood and bone marrow donors, so their example will serve as an inspiration for the general public and help us create a flowing pipeline of blood."
