WASHINGTON, May 4 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Following is a statement by Edward J. McElroy, secretary-treasurer of the American Federation of Teachers, on Senate passage of the Harkin Amendment on Overtime Protection (S.1637):

"By voting to approve the Harkin Amendment 52-47, the Senate today took an important step toward eliminating the potential harms caused by the Department of Labor's effort to rewrite rules governing overtime pay for millions of Americans. The Harkin amendment is a fair compromise that expands overtime protections to workers earning less than $23,660 per year while also ensuring that no category of worker currently eligible for overtime loses that right.
