ARLINGTON, Va., Dec. 1 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Conclusions by Laura Seeff, M.D., of the CDC, published in the journal Gastroenterology point to the importance of colorectal cancer screening but could easily foster the false impression that FOBT alone is sufficient screening strategy to conquer colorectal cancer in the United Sates

FOBT is an acceptable method for colorectal cancer screening but has significant limitations. Annual FOBT followed by colonoscopy for positive tests is associated with a 33 percent reduction in CRC mortality, but many people with polyps will have false negatives, meaning the test does not detect a pre-cancerous growth in the colon, or false positives, if certain foods, vitamins or medications are ingested in advance of the test.
