Summary
CHICAGO, Sept. 13 /U.S. Newswire/ -- At midnight tonight, the federal ban on 19 types of military-style semi-automatic assault weapons will expire without so much as a vote or committee hearing in the House or Senate. Last week, Senator Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tennessee) and House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Illinois) continued to lie to the American people about the reasons why they did not call a vote on the federal assault weapons ban. Their lies and distortions only emphasize their complete lack of concern for the safety of our nation's law enforcement officers and the American public, and their greater concern for a special interest that finances their campaigns.
Speaker Hastert was quoted claiming "he would consider allowing the House to vote on legislation only if the Senate acted first" (Chicago Tribune. "Congress to let gun ban expire." September 9, 2004). However, Hastert knows full well that in March, by a vote of 52-47, the Senate passed an amendment to the gun industry immunity bill that would have renewed the assault weapons ban. The bill was defeated because this and several other common sense gun amendments were attached, and the bill's chief sponsor, the gun lobby, and the White House all pulled their support. For Hastert to now say that he's waiting for the Senate to act first on assault weapons is the worst kind of dereliction of duty.See the full content of this document
