Pew to Host Press Call Previewing Crucial Meeting On Atlantic Bluefin Tuna, Sharks

Summary

WASHINGTON, Nov. 9, 2010 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On Thursday, November 11 at 10 a.m. EST, the Pew Environment Group will host a tele-briefing to discuss how illegal fishing, "crystal ball" management and chronic overfishing continue to threaten the sustainability of Atlantic bluefin and several species of sharks.

This call will prepare journalists for an upcoming meeting of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT), a fisheries body that manages approximately 30 species of fish - including bluefin tuna and sharks - caught in the Atlantic Ocean. ICCAT will meet in Paris, France from November 17-27 to consider various measures to protect severely depleted Atlantic bluefin and threatened sharks and take measures to stop illegal fishing. Speakers will explain why ICCAT member countries must take immediate action to rebuild populations of some of the most remarkable fish in the sea.
