KENSINGTON, Md., Oct. 3 /U.S. Newswire/ -- With October marking the 21st annual Crime Prevention Month, "Throw Away The Key," a national advocacy group that works to reduce crime rates, today urged lawmakers to remember that the best way to prevent crime is to incarcerate known, convicted felons longer. Justice Department studies show that two-thirds of criminals released from state prison are rearrested for new crimes within three years of their release.

"By all means, people should lock their doors and walk in groups at night," said Michael Paranzino, president of Throw Away The Key, eferring to common crime prevention strategies. "But the single best way to prevent crime is for convicted felons to be kept behind ars longer. So after dead-bolting the door, every American should write their state lawmakers and demand stiffer penalties for those who harm innocent people." Justice Department studies show that the average rapist released from prison has served just six years in prison, and the average child molester has served just three.
