L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center Responds to Governor Schwarzenegger's Veto of Marriage Equality Bill

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 29 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The following is a statement from Lorri L. Jean, chief executive officer of the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center, in response to Gov. Schwarzenegger's veto of AB 849, the religious Freedom & Civil Marriage Protection Act:

"Today the Governor sacrificed his role as a leader, and sacrificed an entire community, as part of a clear political calculus to appease right wing extremists and other political special interests. The California legislature, acting in the interest of all Californians, sent the governor legislation that would have removed the remaining vestiges of legal discrimination against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Californians. Instead of seizing the opportunity to sign this historic bill, the governor terminated it, sacrificing our relationships, our families and our rights. At the same time, he issued a statement professing his belief that 'lesbian and gay couples are entitled to full protection under the law and should not be discriminated against...' Yet, his veto is completely inconsistent with these views.
