Smaller Schools Better for Nebraska Students, Study Finds; Academic Achievement Higher When Schools Are Smaller, Data Show

Summary

WASHINGTON, Jan. 20 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Small school systems in Nebraska produce higher student achievement, particularly in the face of high levels of community poverty, according to results of a study reported by the Rural school and Community Trust (Rural Trust).

The report by Rural Trust policy analyst Jerry Johnson, Small Works in Nebraska: How Poverty and the Size of School Systems Affect School Performance in Nebraska, finds that the state's smaller school systems not only reduce the harmful effects of poverty on student achievement, but that they result in better achievement in more affluent communities as well. The complete study is available on the Rural Trust website at http://www.ruraledu.org/docs/nebraska/ intro.htm.
