WASHINGTON, April 25 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Oklahoma Attorney General Drew Edmondson distributed a public service announcement (PSA) to highlight April, May, and June's designation as "Prom and Graduation Safety Months." It is critical that Oklahomans understand the urgent need to prevent drunk driving and underage drinking during this celebratory time of year. Last year during Prom and Graduation season (2004), 713 youths under the age of 21 died in alcohol- related traffic fatalities nationwide according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) - stark evidence that Prom and Graduation season is a particularly dangerous time for our nation's youth. While there has been a 15 percent reduction in the number of alcohol-related traffic fatalities among our youth during this time period, much more must be done to address this problem.

Unfortunately, the number of youths under 21 killed in alcohol- related traffic fatalities in Oklahoma has increased almost 31 percent from 2003 to 2004. The Century Council, a not- for-profit organization funded by distillers dedicated to fighting drunk driving and underage drinking, applauds the efforts of leadership, law enforcement, community organizations, parents and teens to continue to take an active role in fighting drunk driving and underage drinking to lower, and eventually eradicate, the number of these unnecessary fatalities.
