Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids: New Study Confirms Smoke-Free Laws Reduce Heart Attacks, Shows Need to Make All Workplaces Smoke-Free

Summary

WASHINGTON, Nov. 14 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Following is a statement of Matthew L. Myers, president, Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, regarding a new study that confirms smoke-free laws reduce heart attacks:

A new study released today found that heart attack rates in Pueblo, Colorado, declined by nearly 30 percent after the city implemented a comprehensive smoke-free workplace law, including restaurants and bars, in July 2003. The new study is consistent with findings of an earlier study that found the number of heart attacks declined by 40 percent in Helena, Montana, during the six months that city's smoke-free law was in effect in 2002. The results of these studies should not be a surprise in light of the overwhelming evidence that secondhand smoke poses serious, even life- threatening risks to health and provide further reason to conclude that smoke-free laws deliver immediate, life-saving health benefits. The more we learn about the dangers of secondhand smoke the more unacceptable it becomes for anyone to be exposed to these hazards in order to earn a paycheck or go out to a restaurant or bar. States and local elected officials have a growing obligation to enact smoke- free laws that protect everyone's health and right to breathe clean air.
