Update: Landmark Global Tobacco Treaty Takes Effect; American Lung Association Urges U.S. Ratification

WASHINGTON, Nov. 30 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The American Lung Association today applauded Peru for becoming the 40th nation to formally ratify the world's first treaty aimed at curbing the death and disease use and urged the Bush Administration to immediately seek U.S. ratification of the measure.

"Forty nations of the world have seen fit to adopt this landmark public health treaty. Now is the time for the United States to follow suit. We urge President Bush to immediately send the treaty to the Senate with his strong personal endorsement that it be ratified as soon as possible," said John L. Kirkwood, President and CEO of the American Lung Association.
