State of the Union Address Comes Up Short On Housing Says Nahro

WASHINGTON, Jan. 20 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Affordable housing is vital for low- and moderate-income families, the elderly and the non- elderly disabled. More than 14 million people, including 7.3 million homeowners, spent more than half of their income on housing in 2001. High rents and costly mortgages most severely affect low-income people, who may have to decide between paying for shelter or food or medicine. However, in increasing numbers, moderate-income workers such as teachers, nurses and firefighters also struggle to find adequate housing.

Unfortunately, despite the administration's laudable efforts to date to increase homeownership opportunities, the president failed to emphasize in his State of the Union address the larger need to increase the supply of affordable housing, both rental and homeownership, for a growing and more economically diverse population of American families.
