DETROIT, July 28 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Doctors and medical professionals count on the availability of blood each day to respond to accident victims, perform surgeries, provide treatment for patients with cancer and other disease and to assist organ transplant recipients. Yet the only source for this lifesaving medical supply is a healthy volunteer donor. Alarmingly, the number of donors this summer is simply not keeping pace with the demand.

The American Red Cross Biomedical Services of Michigan is issuing a plea for all eligible adults to donate during this blood emergency. The supply for all negative blood types is at less than one-day, with O-negative plummeting to a mere hours supply. The Red Cross considers a three-day supply necessary to meet all ongoing medical and emergency needs. If blood donations do not soon increase hospitals will have to delay or worse yet, cancel surgeries.
